SECURITY
Most people that have considered travel to Zanzibar may have heard a lot of caution about security there. There is some cause for concern when traveling in Africa, just as there is concern when traveling in any destination catering to international visitors. The best advice is to use common sense.

  • Don't walk around after dark unless in a large group of people.
  • Avoid walking on the beach at night
  • Leave your valuables in the hotel's safe (if there is one). This includes your passport. You will not need it except to cash traveler's checks.
  • Ask the hotel staff about places you would like to visit. They will tell you if it might take you into a risky neighborhood.
  • Don't wear expensive jewellery, watches, gold chains, etc.
  • Look like you know where you are going and where you want to go - even if you don't.
  • Keep an eye on your belongings at all times.
  • Be cautious if talking to people you don't know, even the street children. It may be hard to resist, and you may be tempted to want to help, but thieves sometimes use children as tools of their trade.
  • If anyone says, "Remember me, I am from Immigration (Customs, Police, etc.)", do not let them intimidate you or demand things of you on the street. Be aggressive but polite and avoid conversation. Go into a shop or hotel if it is difficult to get away from the person. A true official will generally not ask you for identification or harass you on the street.
