CURRENCY
The currency of Zanzibar is the Tanzania shilling. It is available in denominations up to 10,000/- shilling notes. Smaller notes are 5,000/-, 1,000/-, 500/-, and 200/-. The fractional currency is the cent (though never found). Coins start at 100/- and go down. Generally, the smallest coin you will find is 5/-. The currency bears either the photograph of Tanzania's former presidents Mwinyi or Nyerere. Newer bills have a photograph of the giraffe, Tanzania's national animal. As a result, it is a crime with serious penalties to destroy or deface the currency.
The exchange rate can vary by five or ten shillings in a day. The most recent rate is posted on the Current Information page of this website. Just click the link above.
