CHANGING MONEY
Most travel guides advise you not to change money in hotels because of the poor exchange rate. This is good advice if you are changing thousands of dollars, where a few shillings difference in the rate makes a huge difference. If changing a couple hundred dollars, banks do not make sense – you are better to use the hotel or better yet, a Bureau de Change.

Tip - Currently, a higher rate is paid for $100 and $50 notes. You may lose up to 30/- per dollar on $20's and smaller, even when changing a total of $100 or more of the smaller notes. Travelers' cheques also are changed at a lower rate than $100 cash, and though convenient when lost, costly in use in Tanzania. It is unlawful to take more than 100/- shillings out of Tanzania. You should only change the amounts of money that you expect to use.

You can get money from your credit card, but suffer greatly on the exchange rate. This is not recommended except in emergencies. There are still many places in Tanzania that do not accept credit cards. Also, some companies may impose a surcharge on credit card purchases.
